American Express has teamed up with Multiverse, a mission-driven organization that builds modern apprenticeship programs for talent that have the skills and qualifications for a role, but who may not have a 4-year degree.
According to Multiverse, two-thirds of Americans do not have a college degree, which leaves thousands of talented individuals out of consideration for certain roles and careers.
By working with Multiverse, American Express is offering over 40 tuition-free, paid apprenticeships in the US. Apprentices join the company as paid employees for 12-15 months and receive on-the-job learning and training.
Apprentices have the opportunity to experience the company’s new way of working, Amex Flex, with some taking a hybrid approach and working at Amex offices in New York and Phoenix, and others working fully virtual.
As part of the current cohort, apprentices are working across teams including U.S. Consumer Marketing, Resy, and Technology; and as the program continues to grow, apprentices in the coming year will have the opportunity to build skills across Digital, Analytics, Engineering, and Business Operations.
“There’s so much opportunity for companies to ensure they are accessing the broadest pool of talent, including looking to those who may not have had the opportunity to obtain a college degree,” says Caisey Kakascik, Vice President of Global Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at American Express who leads the program with Multiverse.
“At Amex, we are fortunate enough to work with so many great organizations that help us to create a diverse community of colleagues from all different backgrounds – and we couldn’t be more excited about working with Multiverse to help grow this community. Through our partnership, we are providing on-the-job training and skills that will help apprentices jumpstart their careers so they are further equipped to compete in an ever-evolving workforce.”
An apprentice on the U.S Consumer Marketing team, Theodore M., says “Working with Amex through Multiverse has been an incredible experience because it’s one that I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to break into otherwise. I’ve been learning a lot about myself including which parts of the business I’m able to excel in and bring value to, and where I see myself building a successful career.”
Apprentice Chelsea D. says, “I am very thankful for this opportunity and to be part of a company that wants to change the landscape of how they are hiring and developing talent. Through the program, I’ve felt supported every step of the way – from the people I get to work with each day to the resources available in my role as part of Resy’s marketing team. The work is meaningful, and the opportunities feel endless, which make me excited about my future.”
Kakascik adds, “Building our team with a 360-degree approach benefits both colleagues and the company. Inclusivity fuels innovation – a challenge can be solved from many angles and having people from different backgrounds and with different experiences at the table can make that easier to see.”
Amex also teams up with skills-based programs such as OneTen, YearUp and YUPro to attract and engage talent, and participates in the Business Roundtable’s Multiple Pathways Initiative, which seeks to update companies’ hiring and talent management practices to emphasize the value of skills rather than degrees.
